Meggie straightened in her seat then stretched sinuously. “All right,” she said, handing him his jacket.
Dylan hopped out of the Mustang and jogged around to her side, then helped her out of the car. They crossed the street, hand in hand, and he unlocked the front door of the pub and let her step inside first. Reaching around her, he flipped on the lights. Neon sputtered to life and bright light bounced off the wide mirror behind the bar. The smell of spilled beer and stale cigarette smoke was an assault to the senses after a day on the water, but Meggie ignored it in favor of her curiosity. So this was where Dylan spent his free time. And this is where he’d obviously met his share of beautiful women.
“I’ve never really been to a bar before,” Meggie murmured.
“What?” Dylan asked as he tossed his jacket over the bar.
Meggie knew he’d heard her. He just couldn’t believe her. “I know what they look like. I’ve seen Cheers. But in college I spent my Friday and Saturday nights studying. And after I started working, I just didn’t have the time. Besides, they’re always so crowded. Too many strangers.”
“So where do you meet men?” Dylan asked.
A blush warmed her cheeks. So much for honesty. “That must be my problem. They all hang out at bars, don’t they. And here I’ve been spending my free time at pottery class hoping to meet the man of my dreams.”
Dylan chuckled and Meggie forced a smile, relieved that she’d deflected his question so adeptly. She stared down at the floor and pushed a scrap of paper around with her shoe. “There really haven’t been that many men in my life,” she murmured. “I suppose I shouldn’t admit that, but it’s the truth.”
Dylan hooked a finger beneath her chin and tipped her gaze back up to his. “I can tell you right now,” he said. “If you walked into this bar on a Friday night, you’d have men lined up on either side of you in just a few minutes.”
She couldn’t help but warm beneath his compliment. He always made her feel so special. But then that was all part of his charm, wasn’t it. “The next time I want to meet a nice guy, I’ll just set my house on fire.”
He laughed, then grabbed her hand and pulled her toward the bar. When he settled her on a stool, he helped her out of her jacket. “Meeting a man in a bar isn’t so tough. It’s worse for the guy. He risks rejection in front of all his buddies. That’s enough to scare any man off. All a woman has to do is look pretty.”
“That can’t be all it takes.”
“Here, I’ll show you.” He stepped around the end of the bar and grabbed a bottle of rum. One after another, he added liquor and fruit juice to a glass of ice, then finished it with a drizzle of red syrup and dropped in a cherry and a chunk of pineapple.
